General Contractors Toronto - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

General Contractors in Toronto get a bad rap most days, and it doesn’t help having companies like GarCon Building Group and Euro Group Limited in the news for all the wrong reasons.

It was reported this week GarCon Building Group has gone under, leaving numerous clients, sub-contractors, employees and no doubt suppliers in a bind.
City News’ Andrea Piunno reported the Contractor’s unhappy clients protesting at Owner, Adam Gardin’s home demanding their deposit money returned so that they could continue on with their renovations.

This is a case of gluttony, taking on too much work at once, not satisfying anyone.  They were commercial and residential builders, and should have concentrated on one or the other, not both.

In September 2014, Euro Group Limited was in the news as they were handling a major renovation as well as underpinning a basement at home on Brookdale Avenue in Toronto. Many were hurt, but one of their employees, a nineteen year old, was trapped in the house collapse and died.

So far we have covered the bad and the ugly, but there is also the good to review.  Not all contractors in Toronto are created equal and choosing the right partner for your home addition or home renovation is the key to its success!

A successful project can be had by just doing your homework.  Get referrals from your friends, co-workers or even drop by a home being renovated or has just gone through a major make-over and ask the owners if they were happy with their contractor.

After you have met a few different general contractors, your homework should continue with checking on their licensing, if they are covered through WSIB, if they have liability insurance and if they hold a valid HST number with the CRA .  Always ask for three or more references and make sure you contact each and everyone of them.

So, your homework is completed and the company you chose to work with checks out!
